The Automatic Updates service hung on starting

This is what I get in EVENT VIEWER, event ID 7022

Installed the OS from a Win2k SP3 CD and after the instalation was completete installed GUGELMAYER's UNNOFICIAL SP5.

A 7022 error in a service is very vague, but it usually means that there was an internal error on processing some particular bit of code. More than likely this is a corrupted file or registry entry issue - try using sfc /scannow or a repair installation to fix this one.

Other services might amke that fail. Check for pother stalled services to.

Try and check the C:\Windows\Windows Update.log and see if it has any information in there..

Also try sfc.exe /scannow as cluberti stated

also try re-registering windows update files

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll

The only other thing I can think of is to get us more information about this other than an event ID and we can give you more information

Tried the SFC /scannow

But it didn't finish as it wanted a CD so it could copy some files to DLL cache and I don't have a cd with me ATM. Could this be the cause?

ps. haven't tried REGSVR32 thingy. Cos I rather not since the SFC already needs a CD I don't have. And I really don't wana FUBAR anything-

Tried it now:

sfc.exe /scannow

BUt it still wants a CD although I have it in the CD TRAY.

Could it be that the original WIn2k installation CD had SP3 slipstreamed and this one has GUGELMAYER UNNOFICIAL SP5 slipstreamed. Could this be the cause why Windows doesn't recognize the CD?

That is precisely the reason. Also, if sfc asks for the CD, it means it found system files that have been modified or are not checksum'ing, and they need to be replaced from the CD. Any time you install a new service pack, you should slipstream your original OS installation CD for this precise purpose.
