Big Thanks InTheWayBoy. Nice Tut and easy to follow. In Networks Connections I can see the server now but, can't logon at all. I'm getting this error.

Connecting to tomtom.bigman.com...

Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection.

If anyone can help me please do....thanks in advance!!!

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay in replying.

I'm trying to log on to a domain though I'm wondering if I set it up correctly on the server. Now when I try I'm getting this error

ERROR CONECTING TO TOMTOM

Error 769: The Specified destination in not reachable.

What am I doing wrong? I also remember that when I was setting up the server there was an error message saying something about my IP address was dynamic and a static IP was needed and that I could later enter that. I'm on a DSL conncetion if that means anything to you guys.

Again, thanks in advance!

is the IP attached to the computer a Dynamice IP? if so is it one provided by your ISP? because that can change from time to time when the computer is of f or what not when the lease on the IP is up. that could cause some issue.

by the sounds of it.. your server should have 2 nic's One for your internet and one for your lan. the internet nic can be dynamic.. that is no problem.. the lan nic should be static.

as for your error you are getting.. it sounds to me like you are trying to log onto the domain using a dialup or vpn connection which you havent specified weather or not this is what you are trying to do. if all you are trying to do is log on to the domain. you should not be getting those errors.

Have you installed Active Directory yet?

Have you joined the computer to the domain yet?

Are you trying to log into your domain from across the internet?

Ok, How do I set up the nic's for the lan and the internet? How do i find out what my static IP is and how do I tell the server the static IP for the lan nic once I have it? I can access the internet from the server as I checked useing IE.

I guess I'm trying to access the server through a dialup as that's what it looks like to me. It keeps trying to redial. I just want to log on straigh with out going through a dialup.

Yes I have installed the active directory as advised.

No I'm not trying to log into the domain from the internet.

Thanks so much guys, I'm sure you can tell I'm a real newbe with this server stuff....Thanks!!!!!!!

I think i should add this bit of info as maybe it will help understand what I'm doing wrong.

When I go to "Network Connections on my Client box There is an icon of 2 comp screens, it's right under "Virtual Private Network

Next to the Icon it says

tomtom Disconnected, Firewalled

WAN Miniport (L2TP)

Hope that help.

Thanks

Geez.. you only give people 2 hours to respond.. most people are probably busy at work when you posted this stuff.

For starters.. and I think this will help solve most of it.. you say you only have one icon in your network connections folder which is a virtural private connection. you will need to have a network card installed and not just a modem vpn.. you will not be able to log on this way.. (not entirely true... but it doesnt seem like you have that extent of knowledge). Lets get you to log on to the domain on the same LAN first then we can move to l2tp.

so yeah.. get a network card installed on your client pc then connect it to the server via a switch or a hub. Make sure something is running dhcp or configure the adapter to the same network as the servers lan adapter.

Sorry, i was just jokeing. Anyway, I guess I'm explaining it wrong....I have a net card in all my PC's and they are connected to a hub. Remember I said I have DSL and all of the boxes can connect to the net. I never even used a modem on any of these boxes though I think they have them built into the motherboard.

Sorry again if I p***ed you off

sall good.. I was just being sassy..

I am just gonna read off a couple of steps here and you let me know which one you missed

Set static ip address on Server Lan adapter

promoted Server to domain controller

Installed and configured DNS

Joined workstations to the domain

restarted the computer

selected the domain name from the dropdown menu

typed in a valid username and password

ensuring that the "Log on using Dial up connection" is NOT checked

for some reason your computer is trying to dial when logging on.. atleast that is what i am gathering from your question and responses

According to your list I screwed up things I think.

Ok, please walk me through each step if you can.

First, how do I Set static ip address on Server Lan adapter,

promot Server to domain controller and nstall and configured DNS on the server. I think once I do the first three the other items on your list I hopefuly will have no issue doing.

Thanks so much, your a lifesaver!

go to start -> run -> cmd

In command prompt -> type ipconfig /all

write down this information

Go to the Network connections folder under control panel and double click on your Lan network adapter. Select TCP/IP and select properties

the Automatically configure is probably checked. you want to check the comfigure manually and add the ip address information you wrote down in here.
