The latest survey carried out by Evans Data shows that 52% of Linux developers used to be Windows people. Many Linux developers were old Unix people initially but that, as Linux has gained in popularity, that demographic has changed. The free operating system's main advantages were stability, open source and its low price tag according to the developers. All is not a bed of roses though. There were plenty of complaints that the compilers available for Linux still needed work, 25% thought they were adequate at best. More interestingly, 56% thought that 64bit computing was important for both them and their companies.
