With my Laptop Latitude Dell D600 (win2000 server), I have problem with internet connection, between time to time (not always) I can not access the internet (via LAN at work) neither via wireless card not wired one.

When I checked the ipconfig the result was:

Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig /renew---------(unplugged wired NIC)

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

The following error occurred when renewing adapter WLAN: An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

Is this problem related to hardware ? Or I have to do some configuration ?

I disabled Wireless card from the device Manager, the same problem.

Then I disabled the wired card and enable the wireless card still the same problem is going on.

I thought the problem with hardware, I changed motherboard, still the same problem is going on.

I thought then the problem with software, I had win2003, then I installed win2000, I had no problem with OS at the beginning , then the problem a raised again.

Any clue ?

An IP address of 169.254.x.x means that your DHCP server is not available. Can you ping your DHCP server? Is it configured and authorized correctly? :w00t:

Because I am at work I thought the problem with cable or port, I changed my location to another place to do test, the same problem is going on.

I did simple test to check the DHCP client, I switched to other OS on my laptop (Linux FC3), it could not get IP address from DHCP server as well!!!!!!

I plugged my laptop (OS W2K) to Linksys router (DHCP server at home), it could get IP address from DHCP server (Linksys router ) without any delay.

With your laptop pluged in at work try:

IPCONFIG /RELEASE

IPCONFIG /RENEW

IPCONFIG

If it's still not working, specify a static IP in the same subnet as the network and see if you can ping the DHCP server. If you can, set your IP back to automatic and it should pick up an address from DHCP.

I tried this, but it did not work.

It did work with static. but with automatic it did not work.

Make sure U have DHCP CLIENT enabled in Win2k SERVICES.MSC
You meant Adminstrative Tools->Services->DHCP Client ? IF so you it is enabled.
And are U definatly sure that your company supports DHCP?

Yes, of course I am sure. Now I am at office using internet through DHCP server.

That's precisely what I meant.

And am sorry, have nothing more.

Except maybe U could check the netbios switch. U hvae 3 possible options: ENABLED, DISABLED, DEFAULT

btw. If U plug a diff PC in that Network cable does DHCP work? If it still doesn't then there could be a malfunction in serrver's DHCP LEASES
