The hyperthreading technology was meant to allow the CPU to make use of unused CPU power while running one thread. A thread is basically one set of instructions that a computer needs to calculate. Since we have many programs running at the same time, these threads need to be scheduled to figure out which gets to run next. With a hyperthreading computer, two threads can be processed at once, allowing you to performe multiple tasks at the same time more efficiently.

If you see the two parts to the CPU graph (and two parts to the CPU bar meter), you'll see how each "half" of the CPU is working.
