ardi Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 If I put something in the Recycle Bin it disappears. Open the bin and it shows no files, but if I go to empty the bin, it says "Are you sure...delete these xxx files?" I checked the registry tweak for "Nuke on delete" and it is set to all 0's which I think is correct to leave them in the Bin.If I try to restore, nothing happens, even though it has files in there that it can delete.I'm stumped. Any suggestions?
Press any key Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Right click on the bin and select properties.......... Make sure remove files immediately when deleted is NOT ticked.
ardi Posted August 25, 2005 Author Posted August 25, 2005 Thanks, Press any, but it seems to be set right. Funny thing is that there is stuff in there, it just doesn't show what and nothing can be restored.
chilifrei64 Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 have you run chkdsk on the partition? Do you get the same resultes when you delete a file from the C or D drive?
ardi Posted August 26, 2005 Author Posted August 26, 2005 Good suggestion chilifrei64, I ran chkdsk, no errors. And the problem is not drive or partition dependant.I used to have Norton running on this machine. I wonder if that %&$# Semantec product may have messed with my registry with their "Norton Protected Recycle Bin." If you have ever seen the manual edits needed to remove their crap you will understand why I hope that is not the problem.
Press any key Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 **Other people appear to be having problems too........... http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic16154.htmlThe answer to your problem is to completely remove Norton recycle bin, and never, ever install it again as long as you live. It's rubbish. You can right click on the recycle bin and choose Normal Recycle Bin. THis will bypass the crappy Norton bin and return everything to normal.____________________________________________________________________http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic11432.htmlNorton protected recycle bin problem --------------------------------------------------------------------------------I got a problem with the recycle bin i unistall norton works and the recycle bin is norton protected corrupted i research almost all over could someone help on how to replace the recycle binthanks for the repliesright click the recycle bin and disable the norton protected recycle bin features.if that does not work try running system file checker.open a command prompt and type sfc /scannowyou will need your OS disk for it to repair any damaged files.______________________________________________________________http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic7492.htmlRecycle bin problemNo items are displayed in the bin but indicate that I can delete 38 items if I wish. Any ideas? It sounds like your recycle bin has become corrupted. Check out this thread and see if that helps. There are some good suggestions in there.http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?...ted+recycle+bin_________________________________________________________________________http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic15857.htmlNewcomer, in training Join Date: Sep 2004Posts: 12 What is Norton protected recycle bin ? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------I'm tweaking a few computers for a charity, and they have Norton System Works. I haven't any experience with this program.I notice there is a 'Protected Recycle Bin'. When I click on 'Empty Norton Protected Recycle Bin' I get the following message:"There are 1,500 protected files total on Drive C. You have 1,400 protected files on Drive C."Underneath this are three boxes:Purge Yours/ Purge All/ Cancel What does all this mean? What am I purging, and is it safe to do so? What does this bin do in addition to the ordinary Windows Recycle Bin?Thanks to anyone who can shed any light.Swish In my experience I have always turn off the protected recycle bin. Just right click on the recycle bin and there should be an option of what type of bin you want. Just choose regular bin and it should be better. What is Norton protected recycle bin ? A lot of nonsense, that's what. Thanks for the responses. I'll right-click it and turn it off. I don't know how Norton expect anyone to understand that dialogue box. From what I've seen of Norton System Works, I'm not impressed. It bundles a bunch of things together which a few freeware standalone programs do better, and I've heard it's a real pain to remove. A bloated, pay-as-you-suffer, resource-hogging parasite. And those are just its good points.Ah, feel better after that!Swish______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Some links:http://support.microsoft.com/search/defaul...+Bin+&x=12&y=14http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=ie7&...n%22+++corrupt+http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=ie7&...ted+Recycle+Bin_____________Good luck
ardi Posted August 26, 2005 Author Posted August 26, 2005 Hey, Press Any!!!I think chkdsk fixed it. After your suggestion I ran chkdsk, but the files were still in there (invisible and unrestorable, but still ready to be emptied.) I thought nothing had changed. After reading more of the links you sent, I emptied the bin then tried again. Voila!Anything I put in there is visible and can be restored. Many, many thanks! ****, the people on this forum are amazing.
ardi Posted August 26, 2005 Author Posted August 26, 2005 Oops, sorry Chilifrei64 you were the first to suggest chkdsk. And BTW, I don't use anything with Semantec on the box. It used to be that Norton was a good program, but the greedy people at Semantec ruined all that. I have had to format and rebuild an entire system because of the registry tricks those morons played on me. Never again. Now Partition Magic is gone like Norton, but I'll use an old version till something better comes along from someone else.
