rakem Posted August 22, 2005 Posted August 22, 2005 hi everyone... im trying to configure two new domains, both running windows server 2003 standard edition (sp1) i have configured DNS (primary forward look ups and secondary forward lookups) and the appropriate trusts properly (two way external trusts.) I can log in to each from the other domain fine using termincal services but i cannot get the domains to be displayed in network places. Are there some extra things I need to configure before this works? Im pretty sure everything is set up right as i can ping both domains using their netBIOS names only.Any help would be great! thanks.
chilifrei64 Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 for these things to show up... even though DNS is running and working.. the network places list is populated from LanManager Browser announcements (Broadcasts). If the 2 domains are on different subnets.. they most likely wont be seen in my network places
rakem Posted August 23, 2005 Author Posted August 23, 2005 the domains are on the same subnet, im not sure what you mean by LanManager Browser. Also If i go to run and type in the domain name e.g \\domain.local i can access the shares on the domain that way. However this only works for one domain, if i try it for the second domain e.g. \\domain2.local i get the error "\\domain2.local is not accessable, you might not have permissions to access this network resources contact the administrator blah blah blah, the network path was not found" So could this be a permissions problems and if so where do i configure the appropriate permissions?
amfony Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 NetBiosExsactly what Mr Chilli said. If they are on the same subnet , but seperated by l3 switches, or routers (obviously), a wins proxy will have to be setup (in case of the router) or hardware will ahve to be configured to allow netBios broadcasts.Edit: If u set up a wins proxy, u need a wins server. Why Wins? Because microsoft has left its eggs in both old school and new school baskets. Both workable however.
rakem Posted August 23, 2005 Author Posted August 23, 2005 ok i thought wins was only necessary for network with older servers like NT. SO in Wins what exactly do i set up is it the replication partners? thats about the only thing i can see what you can actually configure something in wins.
rakem Posted August 23, 2005 Author Posted August 23, 2005 Also If i go to run and type in the domain name e.g \\domain.local i can access the shares on the domain that way. However this only works for one domain, if i try it for the second domain e.g. \\domain2.local i get the error "\\domain2.local is not accessable, you might not have permissions to access this network resources contact the administrator blah blah blah, the network path was not found" So could this be a permissions problems and if so where do i configure the appropriate permissions?<{POST_SNAPBACK}>Disregard this I have fixed that problem by adding the servers into the hosts file, now just need the domains displayed in network places
