hi i just reset a older pc with a fresh instal from 98 to xp pro and i also installed a new ethernet card

i installed the drivers for it and i checked it through in device manager and the card is working fine it says

but when i try to set up a connection it says

limited or no connectivity

problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer

now i tried testing this out with my cable(internet) because i know my internet is good i just wanted to get the pc up and running to see everything work but i get that problem

does any one know how i can try to fix this issue ?

ok so far ive done some research and im not sure about this well the ethernet card that i just installed recently says its compatible with pci bus specification revision 2.2 and later

and i believe the revision for the pci's on the mobo are very old about 1.0 or so but it did installed successfully and does show up fine with working status in the device manager

would this be the problem on why i cant connect to a DHCP-server to fully register a ip network type connection

ok for anybody reading along, i figured out the problem, it seems for this particular network card, the windows default drivers installed and they needed to be uninstalled to update to the real drivers

so it wouldnt read realtek but the real network card

then the other reason i wasnt able to connect off internet is because i need a router to share off my ip address therefor with out one i was getting the typical 169 response meaning no ip when in actuallity when tested id want some thing to start with a 192 or a 172 for a valid ip
