You couldn't possible have a creative sound card could you?

Or did you turn on the SRS WOW effects in WMP possibly?

I would strongly urge that you upgrade to the 9 series Windows Media Player and see if there is a noticable difference in quality. If you are still experiencing the problem, post back.

Also, when posting problems like that, try to give a better description of your Sound Card, what media you are trying to play; what type of media file it is, and what codecs if ANY you have install windows %SYSTEMROOT%/SYSTEM32 that may help out alot.

Agreed ... Wmp9 includes so many bugs fixes that there is the a strong chance that the (posible) bug that is cause this may be corected... You could also try turning of everything for the enhancement menu ( view --> enhancements --> ).
