Hello everyone,

I've got a few questions as far as the order in which I should be doing some of the things explained here in the forum.

I'm trying to start kind of small and create simply Windows XP Pro SP2 with MSN7, WMP10, and .NET Framework 1.1 and all critical and recommended hotfixes listed in the sticky.

I've found a few guides along the way:

1) Slipstreaming SP2 into the WINXP CD using NLite - fairly simple

2) Integrating WU6 and Windows Installer 3.1 using Shark007's guide

3) Integrating the two special hotfixes (873374 and 890830) with registry edits using RunOnceEx

4) Adding WMP10 via Gnome's guide

5) Adding MSN Messenger 7.0 via deXter's guide

6) Adding .NET Framework 1.1 + SP1 via RyanVM's installer

7) Using NLite for the rest of the critical and recommended hotfixes (other than two above, all others support NLite's integration method).

I think these guides will give me a good direction to start in. However, after reading a few threads I get the feeling that sometimes success depends on the order in which you apply each step.

Could someone tell me what order each of these should be done in?

Thanks in advance,

belkhal

You've done a lot of research :)

I'd do the hotfixes after slipstreaming the SP2, just seems logical to me. The order of other steps doesn't matter, but the .NET framework would be the last one as you don't integrate, but install it (first logon is ok).

Side notes (just saves some perparation time)

1. Windows Installer 3.1 v2 is available as a hotfix and can be /integrate(ed) or installed from svcpack.inf. WU6 has an installer.

2. WMP10 can be installed w/o integration.

~Always slipstream the service pack first, as it contains all kinds of system files and whatnot for the I386 folder.

~Integrate the hotfixes, which will update many of the files SP2 just created. I highly recommend RyanVM's Post-SP2 Update Pack for several reasons:

1. Very easy integration. Integrate with manually (recommended) or with NLite.

2. It includes KB873374 and KB890830.

3. It includes Windows Installer 3.1 v.2.

~Update WU to version 6 (RyanVM's only includes Windows Update 5.4.3790.2182, so you want to overwrite his).

~Integrate drivers using BTS' slipstreamer (I know you didn't mention them, but just in case you decide to add them)

~Integrate Windows Media Player. You really should be able to do this at any time after SP2, as the Windows Updates and whatnot don't involve the WMP files, and won't overwrite anything. Still, I always do the critical stuff first, and I've never tried doing WMP before the other stuff.

5) Adding MSN Messenger 7.0 via deXter's guide

6) Adding .NET Framework 1.1 + SP1 via RyanVM's installer

These are seperate. They cannot be integrated, they have to be installed. Depending on how you're installing programs, you'll need to fiddle with CMDLines.txt and/or the RunOnceEx registry keys, or GUIRunOnce in the WinNT.sif file. Add those lines/files in last, in case they get overwritten by NLite or the drivers or something. You could add them earlier if you really wanted, just make sure those lines are there when you're done.

Can I add hot-fixes beyond the last one in the pack? Would this be as simple as using NLite, and adding more hot-fixes?

Use the WU6 installer that VAD mentioned? (This would be a post-installation step with RunOnceEx or WPI, right?)

@VAD

Ah, I think I know what you're saying? deXter's WMP10 is an integration method of slipstreaming WMP10 into the WinXP installation process.

I could just get an installer, and use RunOnceEx/WPI/etc to perform an unattended install of WMP10.

Am I finally getting this straight? xD
