hi all i got this strange restarting lag happening to my pc for the last few months and im starting to feel like im having a problem in 1 of 3 areas, cooling, memory going bad or hard drive going bad

well to start off what happens is this.. every time i restart the pc the pc starts to run very laggish / slow its hard to load things up and run normal programs, but when i turn off the pc and leave it for about 15 minutes and turn it back on it works perfect

now i would blame this on cooling but, i even took the side panel off the pc and had a big fan blowing on it all and still no change ,

now im not really sure which one of these areas the problem may be occuring in,, id hate to say it but to me i feel like the hd is going bad but im not sure.

what do you guys think ? any ideals ?

ok so far ive check for any programs giving out malware and nothing,

no spyware of any kind, and everything is perfect pagefile defrag

ive ran a Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for my wd hd to see if its going bad in any ways and the test shows a negative for that

so now im leaning towards memory issues, does anybody know of a free tool that will test the ddr to see how its actually holding up , and to see if its going out ?

You could try running MemTest. That's always a good place to start looking for memory errors.

Have you looked under Task Manager if anything is using CPU cycles while the computer is being laggy?

Did the problem come on gradually, or was it something that happened all of a sudden, and you just never got around to it?

You can always try unplugging and re-plugging in cables and memory sticks. I've solved a couple of quirks that way.

well it was some thing that just happened to me during my last 2 resets, i had redo of my pc that went bad during a unattended instal and that was about 3 months ago, i realised the problem back then but never really had the time to get around to it

ill try your suggestions and post back the results thank you for replying to my misery lol

ok heres my latest update

first i dl'ed MemTest ran it up to 450% and it had no errors at all

second i checked all the wires and reseeded them along with the ram

that still didnt fix the problem

next i dl'erd a prog called MBM 5.3.7.0 to test out the heat on various parts of the mobo, im not sure how percise this is.

but to me it looks hot

test scans ran a average of

case : 105 F

cpu diode : 152 F

cpu socket : 123 F

im not sure what an average temp for a xp 2400+

also what ive noticed by using task manager is

before i restart my pc when its still in its good stat off a fresh start before probs occur my cpu uses at idle 0% but after reboot it uses 15 to 25 % at system idle.

heres 2 pics of my task manger on the before and after effects of rebooting

now let me also explain some thing else.

ive ran my setup with my unattended disk with full exact setup on 2 different pc's that i have and they run perfectly normal even after rebooting them. and they have all the same progs and everything running.

this is a very strange problem to me and also when installing my unattended etup on this pc it did over heat and shut down on me thasts why i believe its over heating,, so i think either way ill have to fix that by changing my cooling fans and everything out for that

what do you guys think ? is it my cooling issues that are hurting me like this ? but if thats true, why is it that after a reboot, the cpu is up to 25 % and tasks like explorer and isass are taking up resources when the only thing opened is the task manager..

and before the reset the cpu idles at 0% with only the task manager open.. ?

any ideals,,

EEEEP!!!!

152F (67C) is rediculously hot! You're probably getting your CPU to slow down just before its thermal shutdown point.

Double check your temps with SpeedFan just to be sure that MBM isn't giving you strange readings.

If it tells you the same thing, you might want to check that your heatsink is properly seated and you have a good case fan blowing air out of the case.

@Zxian

can you help my deciple this alittle,, to me its still showing very hot and this is before i ever restart my,, so its still working fine at this point.. but what i dont understand is why my 3rd fan says 0 rpm,, when i do have a fan on my mobos 3rd spot,, it seems to me that the fans are not matching up to either of these tests can you help me understand it..

this problem is getting worse

btw i do have 2 case fans ,, plus all the other fans that are used like power block, vids, chip set fan and heat sink fan

let me know what ya think before i start to run off and ordered a few things

I wouldn't worry too much about the fan readings - they're a bit trickier for programs to pick up on.

As for the temperatures, can you open up your case right after having run your computer for a while? Try touching the CPU heatsink (carefully) to see if it's really hot.

Also, some of the voltages seem a bit off in SpeedFan. I'd double check these in your BIOS to see if you're getting proper power.

ok my pc has been running for a good few hours now so i just took the case off and carefully placed my finger on the heat sink and its hot but not enough to burn my finger in any ways in fact i could hold my finger there for some time if i wanted to but id still like a better heatsink that was a cheap heat sink that was on sale a few years back for 20 dallors us

now youve mention my volts seem off alittle can you give me an example of a normal voltage for each spec

if it helps this is what in my pc and i built it 3 years ago

soyo mobo sykt400

80g wd hd

512 ddr (2700)

radeon 128mb 9700 pro 8x agp

sb audigy 2

Does your BIOS support any kind of hardware monitoring? You might want to have a look at temperatures in there.

As for voltages, the numbers should be roughly the same. For example your +12V should be somewhere around 12... but it's at 9.98V (according to speedfan). Same goes for some of the other voltages. I think that the VCore looks alright.

As for a new heatsink... can't go wrong with this one.

@Zxian

ok thats a nice heat sink

btw heres my update lol

yes my mobo has a health monitoring here it is

all my volts are normal even the 12v which is really 12.09v

so all my volts are normal its strange how they are off in speedfan

now my temps are throught the bios stats are

cpv temp external 57c / 134f

cha temp 40c / 104f

cpu temp on die 68c / 154f

this is before i ever restart the pc but then again there really isnt much difference in betwwen before and after effects of reseting excepting for the lagging effect

let me know what ya think,, those temps were checked about an hour or so after running

,,, think im in need of more cooling ? it kinda looks like a yes,, i see it as it needs improvment,, but the lagging effect is still bugging me,, and this is all i can think of thats doing it..

thanks

Hey,

Sorry for the late reply... I haven't been near a computer for the past few days... :P

The voltages may or may not show up in SpeedFan correctly. I wouldn't worry too much about it if they're showing up fine in your BIOS.

Anyways... the only thing that I can think of is the temperatures. Your computer may be slowing down your CPU since the temperatures are getting too high, which in turn would cause your "lag".

Hope you get this sorted out.
