Hi, I recently set up security on my wireless network (my router is NetGear) and I set the Security Encryption (WEP) to shared key with 128 bit encryption - I then tried to log on with my laptop and even after I carefully entered my network key (over ten times) it would not allow me access (even though I'm connected) - so, I went to "change advanced settings" and made sure that the "network Authentication" was set to "Shared" and the "data encryption" to "WEP" (when i try to enter the network key the field is too short.) any idea what i'm missing? Thanks for any help!

Did you type the key or the passphrase (some routers have both)? Does your laptop connect if you turn off WEP (use no security at all)?

Unfortunately, WPA was not an option with my NetGear MR814

It is a option according to their site lol:

http://www.netgear.com/products/details/MR814.php

and under Key Benefits it says Pre-Shared Key (WPA-PSK). Thats the one to use - its what I'm running on my network, although I doubt anyone around here would even know about wireless security, let alone hack a wireless network lol.

Dig out the manual-CD/click the [help] button in the router config and find out how to set it up.

I chose a manual one - cant remember it but doesn't matter, just change it again if needs be. I have my desktop wired - and there's always factory reset button in the router.

I'm using a 3com router by the way, so cant help you with a step-by-step or anything sorry, but it should be fairly straight forward.

Regards
