XP Install Error: Cannot Copy Files

Recommended Posts

that is enough to cause problems, depending on where on the disk the errors are located, most definitly try another cd...

@ booogy; yes, SP2 does have problems with some computers BIOS's; in particular ASUS boards... however, if a board has problems, SP2 has been out so long now, that unless you have an exceedingly old board, the BIOS, if flashable, will have been updated... (you have to download and install of course though)

@Meiapaul

if single one file is bad on the CD , if this file is critical, you cannot install XP .

same thing, if the file is not bad, but the optical can read it correct .

sp2 problems with bios??? never heard of this.....

@boooggy

sorry , but maybe I do not name it so correct.

if on one PC XP+SP1 pass all , and XP+SP2 cannot install w/o an

appropriate update of bios ?

I specify

(in fact bios problems with SP2 and newest processors)

in fact

A)a XP+SP1 CD pass the errors

B)mobo saw correct the processor but

probably in back the support for the processor (sempron , celeron D...) was

not so correct (I think)

C)same mainboards with bios from 6..12 month , with newest processors

where believe or not I cannot install XP+SP2 without an update of bios

(I cannot install with a Sempron but I can install with a Barton on same mainboard)

D) of course SP2 is not the guilty one but is

E) not a singular case with my customers in 2004..2005

Try this, I have just had the same problem and finally succeeded by:

Start off with new install of Win 98 se, all the right drivers operating 100% correct according to the device manager in control panel.

Go to start, accessories, system tools, scandisk and scan the drive while in windows. This took about 4 hours for a 40 gig drive. It found 2,500,000 compromised bytes and fixed them automatically (check the fix automatically box).

After that I put in the XP cd pack #1 and let it do its thing whle I made all the recommended choices except that I asked for a complete log of all errors.

It went perfectly this time.

Scan disk from a win 98 dos startup just located one bad sector, not enough.

Bios was set for performance with no changes.

I had all of the previously mentioned errors before this.

Be sure to boot win 98 several times to be sure it is good and test the internet to be sure your cards are right. Have the most recent 98 drivers installed.

Cross your fingers.

Good luck!

Next Ill try starting with the XP cd on andother drive which is new, but which had problems also.

IE.... I think this is a bad sector poroblem on the drive, presuming alll other issues have been worked out.
