chip812 Posted April 5, 2005 Author Posted April 5, 2005 Let me ask this question:Does resetting (rebooting) the modem/router (I say these two together becasue they are plugged into the same power strip and that's how I turn them off/on) do the same thing as winsockxpfix? The reason I ask is I have three computers hooked up in the network and I have to make sure the other two are not doing something critical on the internet (or with each other) before I take down the connection. If I can just run a utility on the affected computer, then that would be preferable... Thanks...
dman Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 chip,No, it is not the same thing, although the effect is the same. A problem that can fixed by rebooting is likely a simple hardware lockup. netsh command changes registry settings. The ipconfig /renew command might be able to help, but don't use netsh unless you have a software based problem.
matrix0978 Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 Wow i just got a chance to look at this thread i could have helped you out lol. Yes my connection shuts off on me all the time. Router is connected to 4 other computers. I have a linksys router and i tried upgrading the firmware which didnt work. So i just rebooted my router and EUREKA! So glad it all worked out for you and you are connected!
chip812 Posted April 5, 2005 Author Posted April 5, 2005 My router is a Linksys also... HHhmmmm.... I wonder if Linksys has a 'small' design flaw... Haven't heard of D-Link having this problem... I have made a note of the location of the winsockxpfix download location (I hope it doesn't change)... (I may go ahead and download it for future use) and the microsoft article.... Thanks, DMAN...
chip812 Posted April 5, 2005 Author Posted April 5, 2005 Let me ask another question (assuming you are still tracking this thread):Does winsockxpfix do anything similar to the 'repair' connection???
dman Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 No, this is what "repair connection" doeshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/289256/EN-US/
DigeratiPrime Posted April 5, 2005 Posted April 5, 2005 http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.htmlWinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings. If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then give WinSock XP Fix a try. It can create a registry backup of your current settings, so it is fairly safe to use. We actually tested it on a test machine that was having a Winsock problem due to some Adware removal, and after running the utility and rebooting, the connectivity was restored.License: FreewarePrice: FreeWindows: windows Win XPFile size: 1412 kbAuthor: Option ExplicitVersion: 1.2Added: Nov 07, 2003
chip812 Posted April 6, 2005 Author Posted April 6, 2005 Uh oh!!! Two things... first... I noticed another thread that could use this information... The other is one of the restore points must have done something, because windows update wants to re-install the update that caused this problem in the first place (I guess the restore point reset some settings so that the update looked like it hadn't been downloaded and installed)... Now my question is: Do I try the install again... The VIA Technologies web site forum doesn't seem to indicate a problem with the driver, but a problem with microsofts auto update (which i don't use - I always manually download updates)... Curious.... HHHmmmm.... Now what?!?!?!!?
dman Posted April 6, 2005 Posted April 6, 2005 My advice would be to not update drivers for anything that is not causing you problems... put it on the "ignore" list.
chip812 Posted April 12, 2005 Author Posted April 12, 2005 OK... I've put it on the IGNORE list. However, my 'AUTO' update has already downloaded the update and now it keeps wanting to install it (from SYSTRAY) every time I re-boot... How do I re-set the update so that the 'AUTO' update doesn't keep reminding me to install??? (I've changed the setting to just notify me that there are updates - it will not auto download anymore... )
