  1. 4+ GB of RAM??? You've got to be kidding me! I've got these same question. How do I know if I can load the 64-bit version of Windows. I have more preliminary information: I do have a AMD64 processor (obviously a 64bit mobo as well). I only have 1 GB of RAM though... I want to know if all my hardware drivers have the equivalent 64bit drivers available. Does Microsoft have anything that will check my computer and let me know that I'm 'good to go'???? B) They used to have something that would check your machine and let you know if your computer was XP compatible... I want something like that for WIN64....
  2. Whatever you do; do not go to one of these websites that pops up with one of these dialog boxes. You will be asking for your computer to be infested. Best bet... disable Messenger Service (not to be confused with MSN Instant Messenger). I don't remember exactly how to get to the setting, but you should be able to search this forum for the answer (or post a thread if you can't find it)...
  3. OK... I've put it on the IGNORE list. However, my 'AUTO' update has already downloaded the update and now it keeps wanting to install it (from SYSTRAY) every time I re-boot... How do I re-set the update so that the 'AUTO' update doesn't keep reminding me to install??? (I've changed the setting to just notify me that there are updates - it will not auto download anymore... )
  4. Uh oh!!! Two things... first... I noticed another thread that could use this information... The other is one of the restore points must have done something, because windows update wants to re-install the update that caused this problem in the first place (I guess the restore point reset some settings so that the update looked like it hadn't been downloaded and installed)... Now my question is: Do I try the install again... The VIA Technologies web site forum doesn't seem to indicate a problem with the driver, but a problem with microsofts auto update (which i don't use - I always manually download updates)... Curious.... HHHmmmm.... Now what?!?!?!!?
  5. Let me ask another question (assuming you are still tracking this thread): Does winsockxpfix do anything similar to the 'repair' connection???
  6. My router is a Linksys also... HHhmmmm.... I wonder if Linksys has a 'small' design flaw... Haven't heard of D-Link having this problem... I have made a note of the location of the winsockxpfix download location (I hope it doesn't change)... (I may go ahead and download it for future use) and the microsoft article.... Thanks, DMAN...
  7. Let me ask this question: Does resetting (rebooting) the modem/router (I say these two together becasue they are plugged into the same power strip and that's how I turn them off/on) do the same thing as winsockxpfix? The reason I ask is I have three computers hooked up in the network and I have to make sure the other two are not doing something critical on the internet (or with each other) before I take down the connection. If I can just run a utility on the affected computer, then that would be preferable... Thanks...
  8. Well... I don't know how to say this... rebooting the modem/router corrected the problem... I'm still at a loss to say exactly what the problem was, but it coincided exactly with the optional windows update to the point that the last screen of the update did not load... Color me confused and I guess I'll just hang on to the extra NIC that I put in my computer... shoot, I may even do that server thing that I've been thinking about... Thanks to everyone for their input... I really appreciate the moral support.... DMAN, can you give me more information on what exactly winsockXPfix does??? Get as detailed as you like, I'll understand more of it than you think I will...
  9. Sounds promising... After I reboot the router/modem, that'll be first on my list... It is not first right now, because rebooting the router and modem only takes a minute...
  10. P.P.S. I didn't mean to imply that the motherboard was physically damaged... I meant to say that it was acting like it was damaged... sorry to mis-lead... I know that it has got to be a driver somewhere, I just can't find which one... I don't believe it is the network driver... I think it is some motherboard driver... or drivers...
  11. P.S. Reformatting is not really a good option.... I have software for which I've mis-placed the original disks (I moved and lost a box of computer stuff somewhere)... If I have to, then I'll burn that bridge when I come to it...
  12. No, I haven't tried resetting the router and modem... two other computers are connected (one wirelessly) and they are doing fine... I think I'll do it when I get home anyway, just to make sure that is not the problem... My computer is not overclocked... I don't believe in doing that... the performance increase is not worth the risk of frying the cpu... I know people that get away with it, but it is my luck that my cpu would instantly fry and I can't afford to waste cpu's like that... If re-booting the modem/router doesn't work, then I'll try the solution that DMAN is suggesting... I'll post any results (positive or negative)...
  13. I sounds like your heat-sink is not seated properly or your CPU is damaged. Either way, you'll need professional help (unless you're technical that way) to remove the CPU and check the heat-sink... if the heat-sink is seated properly, check to make sure the fans are powered up and spinning (under power)... The damage may already be done and your cpu is probably toasted now... Sorry...
  14. I've tried that already... I orignially assumed that the driver(s) had been corrupted, but when the new card (which is a different brand) did exactly the same thing, I'm now thinking there is something screwed up with the motherboard... P.S. I suppose I should have written down everything that I tried... That way we could move a little faster toward a solution instead of you having to trigger a memory... Sorry 'bout that...
  15. I tried that already... (sorry, forgot to mention it)... It doesn't show as an update... I guess because it was 'optional' and not a 'required' update. I seem to recall, in my blind trusting of Microsoft haze, that it was something to do with my VIA chipset and some sort of driver, but I can't be sure since I didn't get a good look at it.... Also, I forgot to mention that using restore points doesn't work either... I tried going back a couple of days (4 different restore points) with no luck...
  16. Found an 'optional' update on windows update. Downloaded it and installed it and now my computer cannot access the network cards... It can see them, but it says there is 'Limited or No connectivity'... I thought the card had fried so I pop off to Walmart and pick up a new card... Now it says the same thing.... It can't be a coincidence that this happened at the same instance that I downloaded and installed an 'update'. I've tried uninstalling the device and re-installing. I've tried updating the drivers... Nothing seems to work... According to the Device Manager, both network cards are working properly. I now have a smoking internet gaming machine with out access to the internet... Any body have any suggestions??? P.S. Chaintech mb w/VIA chipset running AMD 64 cpu 1GB ram Nvidea Video card
