RedBrain Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 My nephew totally messed up his computer downloading god knows what off the internet. When I saw it he said that he had been doing things in Safe mode for months. When he re-boots, it goes right into safe mode with window after window of errors.I want to re-install ME on his system, but I don't want anything left from 98.How do I go about removing the OS totally from the computer? Then, once that is done, do I just reboot with the new install disc in the drive? Please help.Thanx.
FthrJACK Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 I take it windowsXP is installed right now?do you have a windows CD. any 98/me/xp/2k will do??or a "rescue" floppy/cd and some other disc?theres a few ways to do it, its not hard but i need to know what you have first dont panic
Drewdatrip Posted November 24, 2002 Posted November 24, 2002 Im assuming all you have is a WIndows Me cd..so ill start from step #11. Make a Boot disk. This can be done on any computer with 98 or Me loaded, so from your computer goto Control Panels>Add Remove hardware, then goto the farthest tab "Startup disk" Pop in a 3 1/2 floppy and create the disk.2. Incert the disk into the messed computer, and restart, in the boot process the computer will read the disk and you will get some options choose to run with cd rom support. 3. Once its finished you will be in DOS command promptType (without the qoutes) "format C:"it will ask you if your sure press"Y" and it will erace the entire disk. After it has completed it will ask you for a Volume label...this is just the name of the HArdDrive...if it needs no name(fully optional) then just press enter and you will be right back in Command line.4. Restart your computer once more with the DIsk in the floopy drive and once again choose start computer with Cd Rom support, when its loding it will tell you what drive it makes your cd Rom...for the sake of instruction lets just say it picks D:5:Type"D:" (or whatever your Cd rom is labeled)Then type "Setup" This will run the windows Setup and from there its preety much automated...it will ask you the name of the computer etc etc all very easy stuffJust follow the directions and you should be fineGoodluck =Drew
