I'm still installing it, because Im certain MS will release another update soon that will fix the problem. And maybe future updates will require this update? So I will install it.

Well I took it from a clean windows xp sp2 install and put it on my own unattended cd and I let a .cmd file copy it to %systemdrive%\windows\system32\drivers.

i had the exact same bizarre problem as described in the first post.

it was on a machine that had multiple NTFS partitions mounted as folders inside one single SMB share.

i was able to resolve the problem by reinstalling XP workstation with SP2 and all the patches/hotfixes integrated (my unattended disc). i resetup my share the exact same way and the problem disappeared entirely.

if you need more detail let me know. i initially resolved it by uninstalling MS05-011 / KB885250 on any machine that needed to access the share, however the rebuild was the best and final solution.
