98se Frezzing

Featured Replies

Hi All

Recently had a problem with 98se freezing on me. No new hardware or software has been installed. If the pc is left inactive for a few mins it will almost certainly freeze, and sometimes it does so whilst booting up. Ctrl, alt del doesn't work when it freezes.

Don't know if it is the same problem, but scan disk and defrag no longer work. Get a message along the lines of 'scandisk has restarted 10 times...'

I am only using this system in the house to surf the web and don't really want to buy a new pc for a while yet.

Any ideas would be very welcome.

Thanx

BTW are you getting any beeping codes on bootup?

Check/toggle your hibernate / suspend settings & use your manufacturer's instructs for how to get rid of a possibly corrupted hibernate file. For example, these are Dell's: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...rs.htm#recreate

These are some common ones btw:

Amizvsus.pmf

• Save2dsk.bin

• PM_hiber.bin

• Hibrn8.dat

• Saveto.dsk

• Toshiber.dat

Try disabling in your bios the anti-vir setting, sometimes that causes problems. Then run a virus check on your MBR with your regular AV program.

One of these could be going on the fritz: Bios / cmos chip, memory, hard drive, psu... Fans all ok, esp the one for your processor? Ditto Temps?
