IF David Blunkett ever introduces ID cards, a piece of kit like this will be swinging from every copper's belt alongside the truncheon and handcuffs.

The Tricubes 1020 is a new handheld computer with a built-in smart card reader - slot in someone's ID card and a policeman would be able to check their name, address, criminal record and more.

This model also scans fingerprints, so suspects could be eliminated on the spot.
