I posted this on the BartPE board too, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of eyeballs over there, so I hope nobody minds if I ask in this forum as well:

When I unpack BartPE, the instructions tell me to also unpack the subdirectories... but there doesn't appear to be anything left to unpack. Here's what I pulled out of the zip file (pebuilder3032.zip):

I know what a subdirectory is, I know how to use winzip... but I absolutely do not understand why the instructions for BartPE say "Make sure you also unpack the subdirectories!" Once again, I don't see anything else to unpack or unzip... do you?

you need to extract the zip file with "use folder names" option enabled in the winzip extract dialog. This will give you the proper structure with the files organised into subdirectories. If not all the files will be extracted to a single directory and the layout will be effected. Look at the screenshot below:
