  1. Hey all, thanks for replying... after beating my head against the wall for a day, I took the drive back to where I bought it. Turns out the drive enclosure was faulty! Pfffffft.

  3. Hey everyone... I just bought a 60gb external hard drive but windows won't recognize it! I actually had it running once by plugging it into the USB port on my laptop (it wouldn't register on my USB hub/pci card). When I did that, Windows automatically gave me the "adding new hardware" dialog box. But then, I had to restart the computer and now suddenly it's gone. Here's what I've tried so far: 1. Finding it through "Add/Remove Hardware" 2. Plugging it in, then restarting 3. Restarting, then plugging it in 4. Plugging it in, unplugging it, then plugging in again Do I need to adjust some network settings or something? Please help!! I've already moved a lot of stuff to the drive and I really can't afford to lose it. Thank you!!!! (about my HD: I'm in Korea and the only external drives available are ones where you have to buy the drive and then buy a separate case/enclosure to house it. The case has a USB port on it. No software was included - apparently not needed. The drive is a Fujitsu)

  5. Thank you all for your help - the issue's been resolved and hopefully I'll never have to use a recovery cd again!! But if I do, I'll know how to deal with it. Thanks again~
  6. FYI: my friend's computer is a laptop, so pulling out the hard drive isn't really an option. I'm using a laptop too... would networking them together help at all...?
  7. Hi everyone, I'm totally new to this so please excuse my ignorance... I'm trying to help a friend recover files from her computer which is currently unable to startup (Win XP). When it starts, the computer automatically reboots itself at the XP title screen and just reboots over and over and over. So anyway, she needs to somehow recover files before reinstalling XP. I was hoping we could do one of two things with BartPE: A) get online and download, install, and use an FTP program to upload her files to a server - or - B) burn her files to CD Are either of these things possible? I just finished making the BartPE disc but when I tested it on my computer (Win2000) it looked like I was only able to access the contents of the cd. Is this because the BartPE cd was made with XP, an OS that I'm not running? When I run this disc on my friend's computer, will I have access to Internet Explorer and other programs on her hard drive? On one of my previous posts, likuidkewl suggested that I "use a partitioning program from inside PE to create her a partition to keep the files on"... but I have no idea how to do this!! And even if I were to manage to accomplish the partition I'm not sure I'd know what to do next. As you can tell, I know next to nothing about computer technical issues of this scale, but I'm trying to do my best here... Thank you~ Michael
  8. THANK YOU!!!! I'm gonna test my BartPE disc now...
  9. I don't know what I'm supposed to burn to the cd!! The BartPE instructions say "Burn the generated ISO image using a burning application" but the reason I'm confused is because a bunch of other files were also produced: The folder on the left is where I launched the pebuilder application (and it looks like that's where the ISO image was placed)... the folder on the right is the new folder that BartPE created after the iso image was created. Am I supposed to burn JUST the iso image in the folder on the left, or am I supposed to burn the stuff on the right as well? Please help - I'm so close to being done with this!! Thank you~
  10. Got it - thank you!!!! Very much appreciated.
  11. I posted this on the BartPE board too, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of eyeballs over there, so I hope nobody minds if I ask in this forum as well: When I unpack BartPE, the instructions tell me to also unpack the subdirectories... but there doesn't appear to be anything left to unpack. Here's what I pulled out of the zip file (pebuilder3032.zip): I know what a subdirectory is, I know how to use winzip... but I absolutely do not understand why the instructions for BartPE say "Make sure you also unpack the subdirectories!" Once again, I don't see anything else to unpack or unzip... do you? Help!! Anyone?
  12. So, like I was saying... when I unpack BartPE, there doesn't appear to be anything left to unpack. 13. hehe... I know it may seem like I don't know how to use winzip (I do! really!!) but when I unzipped BartPE, there weren't any archives left to open. The only winzip file was the BartPE download, and within it I don't see where I could go further to unzip or unpack any subdirectories - that's what makes the instructions so confusing! There are 183 files within the BartPE download, and none of them are labeled as subdirectories. Sorry to be such a nuisance - just trying to get my bases covered before attempting this. thanks again everyone~
  14. Ok... but the instructions say to "unpack" them! What files should I be unpacking?
  15. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm not sure I fully understand it though. Is winnt.sif a file from the XP installation cd that I have to modify before making the boot cd? and when I change that file, should it look like this: [Data] AutoPartition=0 [unattended] FileSystem=* [unattended] TargetPath=\WINDOWS_2 or this: [Data] AutoPartition=0 [unattended] FileSystem=* TargetPath=\WINDOWS_2 I'm not clear on what you mean by "Beware the windows installation path: "windows2" " And "do NOT erase the partition where windows allready is installed"... will it ask me if I want to do this? So sorry for all the questions!! I'm a total rookie.
