making icons stay put

hi all i have a usb drive and i wanted to make different icons for different folders on the usb disk. but when i take the usb drive to a different computer the icons i had preset for each folder have dissapered.i have the icons on the same hard disk in a folder so windows can find them but it does not. anyone have any idea how to do this so that my changed icons stay on the usb drive
