Setup hanging 'Windows is inspecting your hardware

Recommended Posts

I've followed the unattanded setup instructions and slipstreamed SP2 into XP. If I make a boot CD with these files, everything is fine. However I also made a boot DVD, and put some extra applications on it - not in the $OEM folders or anything, just in their own folders, so that I only needed 1 disk for windows & all my apps. The windows files are fine because I have upgraded windows XP home to Pro with the DVD, however if I try & boot off it setup hangs at the 'windows is inspecting your hardware' stage.

Anyone any ideas what's up? The only file off the windows CD that has been changed is autorun.inf, since I made my owm menu to install the apps off when you insert the DVD.

I've not edited regtweaks.reg or runonceEX.cmd, so they will be defaults. The image is also correct since I can boot fine when it is on a CD, not a DVD.

Astalavista

These files are probably not that important at hardware detection phase.

Best that can be done is examining .log files in Windows folder. Setuplog.log last lines should show where it stopped. Have you integrated any drivers or used nLite?

Astalavista - easy, I was just saying that I hadn't changed them so I thought they wouldn't be interesting. Just in case I had a look & I don't have either of these files.

I've not used nlite & I've not integrated any drivers - this CD is used to install on a lot of different laptops, whatever drivers I put on you can guarantee the next laptop we buy would require different ones, so I didn't bother.

As I say, this is just vanilla XP with SP2 slipstreamed, plus some extra apps on the DVD (but not integrated into the XP install process).

1. your UNattended XP "CD" works without a problem?

2. your DVD version of your UNattended XP hangs during hardware inspection?

3. what does this mean?

The windows files are fine because I have upgraded windows XP home to Pro with the DVD

do mean u say u used your Unattended DVD to upgrade a XP home version?

Correct on all counts astalavista - when burned to a CD, the install proceeds fine. When burned onto a DVD it hangs right at the beginning. And yes, I have used my DVD to upgrade windows home to pro - this does not involve booting off the DVD.

It does NOT have anything to do with his tweaks. His disc is properly burned as well, definately not causing the problems. You're definately chasing the wrong things (just like kennedy said) DI see no need to be rude to the guy because he didn't posted files that don't matter either.

Things to try/look into:

-Have you integrated any specific drivers or driver packs? (looks like a no)

-Any exotic hardware?

-Done any special tweaks with apps like nLite?

It freezes at the hardware detection part because of driver issues, nothing else. My USB2 OrangeMicro iBot makes it do that too. Try with minimal devices connected or on a different PC. It probably will work just fine.
