RyanVM Posted October 3, 2004 Posted October 3, 2004 Did both AdAware and Spybot come up clean in safe mode?
MagicThunder141 Posted October 3, 2004 Author Posted October 3, 2004 Yes they did. I did it 4 times just to make sure too.
MagicThunder141 Posted October 4, 2004 Author Posted October 4, 2004 Anyone think defragmenting or formatting my computer will help at all?
RyanVM Posted October 4, 2004 Posted October 4, 2004 Defragmenting - No (what is it with people thinking defragmenting is for fixing computer problems?)Formatting - Most likely yes
N1K Posted October 4, 2004 Posted October 4, 2004 Defragmenting - No (what is it with people thinking defragmenting is for fixing computer problems?)Formatting - Most likely yesAgreed,Fragmentation refers to the condition of a disk in which files are divided into pieces scattered around the disk. Fragmentation occurs naturally when you use a disk frequently, creating, deleting, and modifying files. At some point, the operating system needs to store parts of a file in noncontiguous clusters. This is entirely invisible to users, but it can slow down the speed at which data is accessed because the disk drive must search through different parts of the disk to put together a single file, so defragmentation can not help you in this case..Reinstallation of Windows XP with SP2 integrated will most probably fix this problem...if not then you have compatibility issue...
prathapml Posted October 4, 2004 Posted October 4, 2004 If you are anyway going to re-format your c:\ drive, you might as well, merge SP2 into your XP CD, and have a perfect installation done.Follow one of these guides to update your Windows XP install-source. (to install integrated with SP2 by default - saves on time, and gives you peace-of-mind)The D-I-Y guide --OR-- detailed D-I-Y guide --OR-- Universal Windows Slipstreaming and Bootable CD Guide.
MagicThunder141 Posted October 5, 2004 Author Posted October 5, 2004 Wow, I guess the problem with the site didn't actually post the post I made yesterday. Well, I have GREAT news. I went to the link provided by prathapml and ended up downloading SP2 directly to my hard drive and then installing it instead of using Windows Update and it worked. I checked the dxdiag and I now have DirectX 9.0c. I have yet to try to play Sims 2, but either way, I am still happy I have at least 1 problem fixed. I want to thank everyone who helped me with this. I really appreciate it. Thanx again.

MagicThunder141 Posted October 6, 2004 Author Posted October 6, 2004 , given that's what I told you to do a couple pages back (use the network install)... I didn't even see the part where you told me to use the network install. I just now saw it. Next time I will be more observant. Thanx though, you are the one who helped me the most.
