Remote Desktop and Terminal Services problem

Recommended Posts

Hey guys and gals,

I am trying to remote into a Win2K3 server through Remote Desktop Connection. Everywhere I read says that RDC is indendent of Terminal Server Licensing, yet when I try to connect, I get the message:

"The remote session was disconnected because there are no Terminal Server License Servers available to provide a license."

Everywhere on Technet I read that no license is needed and it should be automatic to login. I don't need Terminal services, all I need is to be able to login remotely for management.

Anyone have any ideas why I get this message and how I can get remote desktop connection to work?

Does remote desktop connection work if I uninstall Terminal Services?

What's strange is for the past 6 months or so it worked fine, then all of a sudden today it has issues letting in.

Thanks in advance as always!

Sounds like your 120 day grace period is over

Nevermind, found my own problem.

In case anyone has a problem with this in the future, essentially the problem is that terminal services by default selects "application server" mode, which requires CALs for access. If you uninstall and reinstall in the "remote administration mode," you get the 2 freebie connections with XP remote desktop, before utilizing the per-device or per-seat licensing for remote access.
