hi there

I'm trying to shutdown my 2nd pc via remote shutdown using shutdown.exe

both pc's are in mshome.net workgroup connected by a router using dsl.

gaming, folder sharing, etc.. everything's working.

but i cannot remotely shut it down. it says the network path was not found

the pc i'm trying to shutdown is called main

i'm using shutdown -s -m \\main

is my usage wrong? what's the problem here?

main pc uses xp home sp2 (has shutdown.exe)

my comp uses xp pro sp2 (has shutdown.exe as well)

i don't understand how its not working

I've tried \\main.mshome.net

\\main.

\\mshome.net\main

\\mshome\main

\\main.mshome

\\mshome.main

aa going nuts here!

Hmmm. Could be alot of causes for this one. Have you tried performing this operation with the remote system's IP address in place of its name? I think shutdown.exe will support it.

If you keep striking out, you could try sysinternal's psshutdown utility. Personally, I prefer it to the native shutdown.exe. Here's the link...

Let me know if you need further help. Good luck.

well yes i had tried with the ip too, hasn't changed.

also tried -i it still says not found...

i've disabled the firewall already..

1 thing I can think of is, maybe my router somehow messes this up? though i've the hardware firewall disabled...

-f is not even a choice since it complains about the comp not beening found, i tried it anyways, it didn't work.

just tried the sysinternals shutdown command, its not working i tried with ip as well but it says not found??

which services should I need to enable?

enabled: routing & remote access

enabled: seconday logon

enabled: all the rpc stuff...

still not working???

what do u mean by rpc connectivity?

nothings working??? wierd what the heck?

do i need to copy the PsShutdn utility to the computer i'm trying to shutdown as well???

trying all the settings with both the address and the ip confused here :(

do i need a domain or something to do this?

and do i need to enable any services on my comp to accomplish this?

Since you have already said that other levels of connectivity are functional, the following suggestion probably won't solve the problem. However, have you tried to ping to each machine, from each machine? Try it by both machine name and IP address, from each system. Did you get any failures?

I've also verified your syntax with shutdown.exe and it works on my network.

Psshutdown also allows you to specify a username and password in order to shut down the remote system. Even though I don't *think* this is your problem, you could try psshutdown and actually specify the admin account on the remote system:

psshutdown \\main -u main\administrator -p yourpassword -s -f

And no, psshutdown does NOT have to be present on the remote system.
