As I understood it, if you put the MCE2005 CMPNENTS directory on the root directory (parallel to i386) and you start installation normally then use a MCE2005 product key, it will install MCE2005 automatically.

I'm going to try it right away as well, so I'll let you know how I do.

before i do this....i just wanna make sure we have the same version. in my CMPNENTS folder it has 3 more folders:

INSTALLER (has a bunch of .dll fiiles along with 3 more folders)

MEDIACTR\I386

NETFX (has I386 and V1.1)

Yes it can be done! I've even got created an unattended install that puts media center on a VLK edition of XP SP2 (very hard to do btw).

I wouldn't recomend this for newbies, there's some .net programing involved but if you realy don't want to have to activate XP MCE (i.e. you don't have access to the internet) then this is for you.

Sorry, I meant a Microsoft Authorized (ie, Windows XP product key + CMPNENTS folder != MCE) Media Center product key.

Otherwise you'll have to resort to tricks to getting MCE working on top of a exsisting XP install or a XP install that does not have a MCE product key (they are different in terms of how they are generated).

so can i just use my current xp pro key for my xpcd? or do i need it to be an mce key? this is confusing. i downloaded mce 2005 off irc.

If you install MCE 2005 from the ISO off IRC you will need to use an MCE key, but, the ISO has two drawbacks, 1. It's only an evaluation copy so it's timelimited. 2. If you want to use MCE for more than 60 days you will need to activate XP.

Last versions of Media Center 2005 in irc are cracked to work in xp, so you can copy CMPNENTS to your cdroot dir and make unattended install of xp pro vlk, in the uattended install add the batch file for instalation of mce (the cracked versions in irc work only in xpsp2), burn the compilation and you have an MCE 2005 cd with xppro cdkey

The product key is checked upon entry. Typing a MCE 2005 product key will install MCE 2005. Typing a XP Pro product key will NOT install MCE components, but will install XP Pro.
