Drivers Causing BSOD?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a problem:

- My first Unattended CD was simply WinXP with SP2 integrated, plus my drivers in %OEM%\$1\Drivers . When I installed this CD in VMWare, following installation (the reboot), I got a BSOD, which restarted my computer, to the BSOD, to restart, etc.

winnt.sif:

[Unattended]
UnattendMode=ProvideDefault
OemSkipEula=Yes
TargetPath=\WINDOWS
OemPreinstall=Yes
UnattendSwitch="yes"
OemPnPDriversPath="Drivers\001_LAN;Drivers\002_display;Drivers\003_modem;Drivers\004_sound\SMAXWDM\W2K_XP;Drivers\005_touchpad;Drivers\006_infared;Drivers\007_SD;Drivers\008_wifi\Setup;Drivers\008_wifi\Setup\I8500;"
DriverSigningPolicy=Ignore

- My second Unattended CD was XP-SP2 (same as original) with an "Install" folder (for WPI - post-install applications), and the Drivers folder removed. This installed perfectly.

This clearly shows the problem is with the drivers, but there are so many of them that it would take about 15 different ISO's to figure out which one. Coudl anyone help me?

I included the BSOD as a pic attachment.

Microsoft says, about this BSOD:

Stop 0x000000D1 or DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

The Stop 0xD1 message indicates that the system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process IRQL that was too high. Drivers that have used improper addresses typically cause this error.

Interpreting the Message

This Stop message has four parameters:

Memory referenced.

IRQL at time of reference.

Type of access (0x00000000 = read operation, 0x00000001 = write operation).

Address that referenced memory.

Resolving the Problem

For additional troubleshooting suggestions that apply to all Stop errors, see "Stop Message Checklist <prmd_stp_hyzf.asp>" later in this appendix.

Stop 0xD1 messages can occur after installing faulty drivers or system services. If a driver is listed by name, disable, remove, or roll back that driver to confirm that this resolves the error. If so, contact the manufacturer about a possible update. Using updated software is especially important for backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, DVD playback, and CD mastering tools.

Is there a way to determine what's wrong? Namely, which driver is causing this?

The drivers I am tyring to install are Toshiba Satellite 2455-S305 drivers. They came in driver packs:

[if you want to check the files for yourself, they are on the toshiba website (http://pcsupport.toshiba.com/) and then you have to go: Downloads (on top); Portables -> Satellite -> 2455-S305]

The 9 Files I want are:

Audio Driver (zm10sndx).exe

Display Driver (s245vidx).exe

DVD Driver & Utility (tm1dvdramx).exe

Infared Driver (s245firx).exe

LAN Driver (s245ethx).exe

Modem Driver (s113mdmx).exe

SD Card Driver (s245sdcardx).exe

Sound Driver (s245sndx).exe

Touchpad Driver (s245tpadx).exe

I have them all extracted to folders in Drivers.

In addition, I have a Dell TrueMobile WLAN card (I copied the entire CD to my harddrive and found .inf files in two folders:

\Setup, and \Setup\I8500 (amazingly, the filenames are the same in each of these folders, but different file sizes!)

Also, I have successfully installed ALL of these drivers manually (by running the .exe), without problems. But I want to be able to do it automatically....

Anyone read all the way through this and wanna help??

i've got a similar problem and i guessed you've got a similar hardware, but that's not the key :}

i can't only help u with typical tips like rebuild the iso image, and because vmware it's just a "pc emulator" try to install it in your current pc with real hardware (u can do a new partition and install it there). if that not work try to update your drivers, sorry can't help u more ;)

hmmm...

sounds promising, but I never did that, and i dont know how.

How do i make a partition/install on that one. and how do i remove the partition, when i'm done?

if i could do that, why do i need VMWare???

ps - i tried putting ALL the drivers into the Drivers folder, without subfolders. I didnt know if it would make a diff., but I got the BSOD anyway. :(

I'd recommend a tool like Symantec PartitionMagic to do that! It's very easy, but still you'd need to have some basic experience. (Since you might delete your entire Windows/Backup/whatever partition if you do something wrong)

Looking for tutorials now...

well a short tutorial: search for a partition utility, most of us use partition magic but there are other non-comercial alternatives that will do the job.

most of them have a similar menu where you can see your partitions like bars and a nice menu.

search for an option like "resize partition". you'll be prompt the size etc, so 5gb will be enough, remember be sure to backup your data until the resize.

after that you can burn a cdrw with your xp sp2 installation, when installation starts, it will ask you to select a partition so select the new created non-allocated space and format it with fat32 or ntfs as you like. let the installation finish and test your changes (you can always select in the boot menu return to your old OS). hope it helps ;)

i understand everything until that last line...

when i have two partitions, how do i decide which to use (ie - how do i change).

also, how do i get rid of a partition, and just have all my space under one drive, like it is now - will doing that delete all my data?

sorry i missed to explain that thing :blushing:

when you power on, you'll be prompt which of the 2 drives (that contains different OSs) want to boot. if after 30sec (by default) you don't select 1 you'll start with (last installed) xp.

about how to delete and if you can delete your data: as i said in the "small tutorial" ( :P ) you can resize your partition so you can simply convert your new partition into unallocated space and the resize it to a new bigger one. it will not erase your initial data but becareful and make a backup until start :yes:

Ok, first of all, thanks for explaining the partition thing.

On a side note, all day long I tried making diff ISO's removing different drivers.

I just found an ISO that worked - No BSOD. The driver that I removed (and, apparently was causing the BSOD when left in) was the TOUCHPAD driver.

I hope this was the problem, and that I'm done with it....
