Cube623 Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 When I try to get onto Windows Update (v5) it gets to the screen saying: "Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click Install or Yes to install the software."And it doesn't do anything it just stops at that screen, no security warnings come up and nothing happens (i've left my computer at this stage for 3hrs and nothing has happened) which means i can't install any windows updates. I've tried Automatic Update but that doesn't do much either. I really want to get this sorted as i have recently reinstalled XP due to a hacker deleting NTLDR which means i have no windows updates installed at all, and also because i want to install SP2 as it sounds good,ThanksCube623.
aresgodofwar Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 try downloading sp2 from download.microsoft.com and see if that fixes the problem
Cube623 Posted September 8, 2004 Author Posted September 8, 2004 try downloading sp2 from download.microsoft.com and see if that fixes the problemwhen i try to download it that way i cant, there isn't a link it just says go onto windows update to get it but i cant as it isn't working. The only one i can see that i can download is sp2 for IT professionals to install over a network but i haven't got a network but would that change anything?
aresgodofwar Posted September 8, 2004 Posted September 8, 2004 no, all that means is it is larger than what you would typically download from the update site. go ahead and download that one. should be about 266 MB.
Cube623 Posted September 8, 2004 Author Posted September 8, 2004 Thanks i'll give that a try see if that fixes the prob
argon007 Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 Maybe you got the virus... because my friends of internet has seen this problem... so... he solved...1. Reinstall Windows XP (format)2. Install Windows XP SP23. Install Windows Update, don't try to change v4 to v5, or you will get virus...4. Install the software that you like.
codeblue Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 i have the same problem.Just got a new laptop with sp1 xphome installed so i updated to sp2 via disk from microsoft. now i have the same prob as Cube623. (didnt try using Windows Update before as sp1 isn't secure)BITS and AUTO UPDATE are set to auto in services, tryed manuley replacing update V5 files without luck. Its as if it cant load something to continue with the update sequence?Dont particualy want to reformat, but could try removing and putting back sp2 if anyone feels it might help?
codeblue Posted December 23, 2004 Posted December 23, 2004 wasnt a sp2 issue. uninstalled and reinstalled without any joy??? Other mahines on the network can access windows update but they use wired link.
