downloads freeze

Recommended Posts

For quite a while now my downloads have been freezing on me, and originally I thought it was just a problem with Mozilla, but it also happens to me in Firefox and Internet Explorer. I can download really small files, like pictures and midis, but whenever I try to download a movie trailer or an mp3 or something like that, it'll always freeze, mostly after about 3-5 megabytes have been downloaded, but sometimes it's less and sometimes more.

Can anyone offer me any help? I don't want to have to format >.<

I'm running Windows XP SP1. I'd have SP2 but yeah, downloads freezing *cries*

Thanks for any help.

Yeah, i think it's because of the network too. Try create new connection, do some tweaks, check the hardware, see if things improve. have you try using a download manager, it will almost always give you detailed log for checking the downlaod status.

I'm on 725k broadband, or something round about the 700k mark anyway. If only it would download at 700kb/s -_-

Well, I'll try making a new connection, and the only download manager I use is the one you get with Mozilla, which I have no idea if it give you logs and stuff. Does it? Or is it just a window showing you all your downloads to save space on the taskbar? *shrug* Anyway, I'll post back what happens once I make a new connection.

edit: Oh, so it's 768 kilobits? I always thought it was kilobytes, and was thinking "why the hell are my downloads going at 90-ish kb/s then?!" heh. Thanks for clearing that up.

hmm... well making a new connection (i.e. went into the Network Connections in Control Panel and made a new one which overwrote my old one) didn't help. So I'm guessing it must be due to timeout like XtremeMaC said.

How do I disable/fix this timeout problem?

That, or I could just get a download manager... What would you suggest?

the timeout problem might be bc of several things

1st the server u're trying to connect might have slowed down. or its on a slow connection.

2nd thing have u ever altered your connection settings like mtu? I doubt so but still. (if u never changed them u should be okay. or u can change them) there is a small program for it called tcp something? I don't remember.

for the dl manager I use flashget. I've been using it since .5 I think. I love everthing about it. I've used others but I love flashget. it allows u to connect from 10 ports at max which quite often speeds up the dl.

the other dl manager I used for a while is mass downloader from metaproducts. it can connect up to 100 ports (they are not really ports I forgot the exact name for it) anyways but I've always had minor problems with it. but it's really fast if u have the hdd speed and internet speed for it.

I experienced similar problem for the past 7 days (even with Flashget). Well, today I managed to discover the cause. I am using Sygate Personal Firewall Pro. Disabling (Exit) the Firewall enabled me to download files without any problem.

Try disabling your firewall when downloading......
