Computer freezes when net cable disconnected

I wasn't sure of where to post this, but I guess I've decided now.

I own laptop with Windows XP SP2 and have Verizon DSL. It comes with the Westell 2200 DSL modem. I was wondering about the following problem I've been having:

Whenever I disconnect the Westell modem without disconnecting from Verizon DSL (I use the NIC Ethernet option over the USB), my computer freezes, and in no way am I able to recover my data, nor is the mouse even allowed to move. I must do a reboot.

I was wondering if anybody else has this same problem or if anybody knows of a fix.
