Unable to install SP2

Featured Replies

..on my stationary system. I have installed it perfectly on my laptop, but the stationary refuses to install it.

It unpacks fine, but when "performaning inventory" it quits with the message "An unknown error occurred". I have removed the custom bootscreen, and I even tried to install it in safe mode. I have also tried several different downloads (of SP2) but nothing helps. Eventviewer doesn't give me any additional information.

The system is XP with all hotfixes (besides windows messenger 4.7), hardware is.

Locate the Windows XP SP2 Setup log files. The Setup program logs information about the Windows XP SP2 installation to the following log files:

Setupapi.log

Svcpack.log

Spuninst.log

look for following logs created by windows xp

setupact.log

setuperr.log

setupapi.log

but first of all besides all of this before setting up windows xp . One must run this command satrt > run <cd drive letter > say d:\i386\winnt32.exe /checkupgradeonly

switch to find compability issues.

All right I had a quick peak in the log files.

svcpack.log was the most interesting one. Near the bottom, just before the errormsg I found this:

105.204: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine value, error 0x2

105.204: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery.

105.219: An internal error occurred.

109.641: Message displayed to the user: An internal error occurred.

109.641: User Input: OK

109.641: Service Pack 2 installation did not complete.

so spuninst.exe failed to unregister... I have disabled restore points, but this shouldn't affect the SP2 install as I also have done this on my laptop.

Can it be because I have an unattended windows install laying on my harddrive? (not the actual install, but all the files)

Moving the unattended XP install from my local partition to my server didn't change anything. :(

105.204: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine value, error 0x2

Means you tried to Uninstall the servive pack from the command line...

Did you run this: C:\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\?

Might be time to format and reinstall... you have backups right?

Uhm I did not try to uninstall anything.. This is the message I get when I run sp2 setup.. I have backups but I really don't like the hassle of reinstalling everythig. :(

ok

what you need to do is this

check SetupAPI.log

Correct the permissions on the Registry Key referrenced in the SetupAPI.log

and everything will be ok

also check permissions here:

the permissions on the Registry Key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Security\Security

The permissions on your system should be:

Administrators = Full Control

SYSTEM = Full Control

if they are not

change them accrodenly

hope this helps

update me on how it goes

Turbompc: I changed the rights on the last Regkey, but I don't know which one from setupapi.log I should change? Teh last one refers to my printer in the reg..

Changing the last one didn't help at all.
