GeneralMandible Posted July 20, 2004 Posted July 20, 2004 I am trying to install Norton Internet Security on a friends system for them. Seems simple. I insert the CD, it autoruns and shows a screen that has the option to install, browse cd, and exit. I click on the Install option and go through all the crap for wht to install and putting the key in. Looks good so far. Then it tries to initialize and pops up an error: "MSI must be run from setup". Holy hell! I started from the autorun.!Does anyone know why Norton does this? Is Norton just crap and should I just install a bunch of freee security software? Please share your opinion.
GeneralMandible Posted July 21, 2004 Author Posted July 21, 2004 By the lack of responses, I draw the conclusion that Norton sucks. I will be going to something different in the future.
prathapml Posted July 21, 2004 Posted July 21, 2004 From the look of it, maybe that was a pirated CD, with a custom/modified autorun.Look for a setup.exe and run that instead - you shouldn't have any problems after that.Moving to something else? I would suggest this:ZoneAlarm Security Suite 5They are simply the last word in security (at the consumer-level).
GeneralMandible Posted July 22, 2004 Author Posted July 22, 2004 It was a retail copy and I did try running the setup from the CD...no luck. This is the 3rd time I've came across issues with installing Norton. I use it at home with no problems. Oh well. The person I was helping was able to get a refund on it. I just set her up with AVG for now and installed Sygate Personal Firewall. Then I set up accounts with passwords and got rid of the owner account. This should keep the system secure. She already was noticing email with viruses attached. Thanks though!
mazin Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 The person I was helping was able to get a refund on it.So, the problem was from the CD not NIS. NIS is a powerful application.
Solid as a rock Posted July 26, 2004 Posted July 26, 2004 The person I was helping was able to get a refund on it.So, the problem was from the CD not NIS. NIS is a powerful application. norton ask to much power, i dont like it. kaspersky ask minimal power and works very fine without strange things. if interested, 1 month trial is aviable....please notice i have use norton a few years. NAV 2000, NIS 2002, NIS 2003, NAV 2004 and NIS 2004 and i always get crazy of the problems occurs with norton. after this i use zonealarm + kaspersky. but i noticed a few problems with zonealarm so i now use sygate (= much better then zonealarm) + kaspersky and now it works very great. i cant believe if there is a better stronger powerfull system without asking much from my cpu. also please notice kaspersky always be the first with update when a virus breaks out. edit: i think u will try the english trial kaspersky? http://www.kaspersky.com/trials?chapter=146481750 i see this is 15 days trial, i dont understand because i have the dutch kaspersky and i read "use this for 30 days trial". i dont know why the english is 15 days.OFFTOPIC: the js works fine. i have place a post about this in your own topic to report some thingys.
