ntoskrnl.exe is changed, I wanna install XP SP2

Hi all,

I've changed my ntoskrnl.exe file long ago and I've no backup of the original for it. Now when I try to install the Win XP SP2 Build 2162 it says my ntoskrnl.exe is changed and it's needed to run that installation. Is there anyway I can download/repair the file? Please help.

I have:

Win XP Pro Corp SP1

hi look on your original XP CD , its there NTOSKRNL.EX_

copy it 2 your desktop, goto start > run > cmd

type:

expand "%userprofile%\Desktop\NTOSKRNL.EX_" "%userprofile%\Desktop\NTOSKRNL.exe"

i forgot 2 add, just overwrite all existances of it with the original 1 (the 1 just extracted) should only be in WINDOWS\System32

EDIT: instead of always replacing your ntoskrnl.exe with a "patched" 1, do this

copy the custom kernel to the system32 folder inside windows directory rename the custom ntoskrnl.exe to mykernel.exe or whatever name u want

edit boot.ini the line with your OS on it, put this

/kernel=mykernel.exe

it will read

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /kernel=mykernel.exe

MCT, I've found it the file in CD

But that command did not work

I typed

C:\Documents and Settings\myname>%userprofile%\Desktop\NTOSKRNL.EX_" "%userprofile%\Desktop\NTOSKRNL.exe

came up:

'C:\Documents' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

What's the problem?

btw it's 948kb file, half the size of the original. is this right?

u didnt type it like i said

expand "%userprofile%\Desktop\NTOSKRNL.EX_" "%userprofile%\Desktop\NTOSKRNL.exe"

nothing more nothing less

EDIT: by what u posted, it looks like u missed quotes

EDIT2: the size is correct, because the other file contains larger images, u can also open the file with an extracting program, like powerarchiver, 2 extract the file, but this is easier
