benners Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 Is it really worth spending 20+ hoursIt may take couple of hours to make your first Unattended Windows XP disc****, I must be a retard, it has taken me since I signed up to this forum to create, design autoplay menus and perfect my tweaked disc, (yesterday ).Like a few people have mentioned, I think it is interesting too, I have learned a lot of stuff, had a few all nighters testing and improving and as I was the first port of call to fix, repair and do a wipe and load on other peoples puters it has saved me time, (its also kept me awake at work), when you are the most experienced person in your circle of friends etc, you feel like your the s***, but after reading post on this forum you realise your just s*** and wonder why Bill Gates doesn't employ some of the participants of this forum. Before doing this disc I spent ages creating Autoplay menus that I manually ran, and even though the settings were imported from reg files and exes replaced with a click of a button, it still meant I had to sit there doing it and there was always a tweak that I picked up from the net, applied then forgot about, then spent ages trying to remember where I saw it, now everything (I Think) is commented for easy searching and have discovered Wraith's ace Xplode that has replaced a few batch files that copy the current files and settings from C: drive to their correct folders on my XP DVD.Bit of a long winded way of saying "Yes", but yes it is worth it.
GeneralMandible Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 I've been learning a tone of crap the last two weeks working on Win 2k & XP unattended discs. I learned some neat tricks that we use for app and reg settings distribution on the WAN. Once I get them setup at work, I'll just make a copy of the OEM folder with some mods and use it for home.Summary:Learn it at work, where you get paid for it. Then use the knowledge at home. This way you're not watsting your time.
GeneralMandible Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 [Off Topic]Here are some of the others I get:Tim, dim but nice (english comedian character)Top Cat (cartoon character, my initials are TC)Not heard about the Monty Python one before, i'll add it to my list [/Off Topic]Holy Crap! You're from the UK and you don't know about the Monty Python one?!Funny movie
WwTIPPYwW Posted July 16, 2004 Posted July 16, 2004 my two cents - it is only worth it for the challange - too many things change too often to be a truely effective cd. If you have to install new patches, whats the point!?Also new software versions/DAT updates/etc mean you have to constantly update the cd to be current.Best thing would be a XP unattended install hard drive! A few gig drive dedicated to the installation of XP and stuff would be the best. Then you could easily add new stuff.I just like doing it cuz I'm a geek, like the rest of us here!
