June 20, 200422 yr So, my laptop locks up real bad one day. So I turn it off then on again. On bootup I get the message "Disk Read Error Occured. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart". And of course that doesn't help. So I go into the Windows Recovery Program and run chkdsk /r, fixmbr, and fixboot, all to no avail. chkdsk /r gives me "The volume appears to have one or more unrecoverable problems". I ran some sort of diagnostic in the bios that came with the computer which told me that I had a bunch of bad sectors on my harddrive, but it should still work right? And I know that the harddrive isn't completely shot because:1) It's less than a year old2) It's not clicking or doing anything strange3) I actually had this same exact problems two days before and I was able to fix it with chkdsk /rCan anyone help me out with a way to get back into Windows (XP Pro SP1) and/or get all my files back?And no, I can't connect it as a slave to another machine because it's a laptop...
June 20, 200422 yr Just because it's only a year old and not making any noise doesn't mean it's not failing. The fact that you're having problems after you 'fixed' it points to a hardware issue (you can't fix a hardware problem using software).If you want to recover your data, you can try PC Inspector. It's free. After that, I'd recommend booting from a floppy that has FDISK and FORMAT on it. Delete all the partitions and remake them. Run FORMAT with the /U switch (FORMAT /U) and see what happens. If FORMAT runs into any problems, then your drive is failing.You do have a warranty for that drive, right?
