Unattend install of XP

Recommended Posts

I have created an answer file using setupmgr, and renamed it winnt.sif. I subsequently placed it in the I386 folder which is off of a folder called XPCD and ran CDImage for XP. This created and ISO image that when ran from Virtual PC will boot and start the setup process for windows, but I am always prompted for the things I answered in the answer file. Can anyone point to the error of my ways.

Thanks...your help is greatly appreciated

UnattendMode=FullUnattended

won't show you any screens, unless information has been left out of the winnt.sif (it will give an error saying the administrator has not provided all the required information, then continue unattended after the info has been provided)

based on his winnt.sif it should work... i'd assume the original compressed version still remains or that he isn't booting from CD (booting from floppy or running setup from windows)

Your attached winnt.sif has the extension '.txt' on the end (winnt.sif.txt). If this is how it really is on your unattended CD then it wont work - windows install will not find it, it needs to end in '.sif'. Do you have the 'hide extensions for known file types' ticked in your folder settings? If this is ticked, then when you rename the original unattended.txt file, if will keep the txt extension, but look correct in the explorer listing. Check the file with this setting off, and if the extension is wrong change it.

If however, you changed the extension to upload it here, just ignore me :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. The file I attached winnt.sif.txt was an error. It is really named winnt.sif and is located in the /XPCD/I386. I am booting from a CD that contains an iso image of XP (used CDImage). I am just wondering how winnt.sif is called. I was told that I needed to create a batch file using winnt with the unattend switch to get this to work. If this is true can anyone show me how this is syntaxed and where the batch file should be placed. Details are appreciated

Thanks again to this wonderful forum, it's good to have a community of experts
