Does anyone know which fonts are needed by XP and which are save to be removed?

It's hard to say really. It depends on what applications you have and which fonts they use. The recommended method of uninstalling fonts is dragging them out of the fonts folder and storing them in another. This will allow you to easily restore your fonts incase you uninstall an essential font. I would say definitely keep arial, verdana, Times new Roman, courier fonts, serif/sans-serif fonts. Possibly others.

I think I'm gonna remove them one by one and test with virtualPC.

Okay, just removed some fonts and tested in VirtualPC:

No problems!

These fonts I kept:

I now only got 29 fonts, instead of 180!! on a normal (unattended) XP.

You can drop webdings and wingdings unless you really need them...
