So... since internet has lots of different updates lists (and some of them now became obsolete), which updates or their packs better to install on Windows 9x in 2025?

 

For pure Windows 98SE Rus & Eng I maintain collection of raw QFE and some other updates with descriptions.

And look at the BolenB sets for integration into distribution media.

It will be used inside VM (VMware), no real hardware (both old and modern).

AFAIK on VMs the only thing you really need on modern hardware is TLB ivalidation patch for 98/ME plus speed patch for 95/98.

Yeah, patcher9x is must-have for VM. On the other hand, i guess it won't harm to install official MS updates with bug-fixes (security holes for 9x not so actual) and maybe some unofficial stuff with same purpose.

 

Upd. Founded one interesting thing, some update cd with official updates only (https://archive.org/details/w98se-upd-r1). I guess this thing is also worth to be checked.

 

Upd2. Speaking about BolenB sets for integration. I founded thread on old-games, but it has sets only for russian release, are they presented somewhere for english too?

Unofficial stuff has one unsolvable problem - it depends too hard on taste of maker of the pack (and third party software he/she is trying to run on his/her hardware). As good example touched above - the valuable third party updates for real modern hardware are not needed at all after you narrowed your request to using inside VM.
