Help it's locked me out!

Hi there, I need help and fast!! :)

I've been off the net for about a month now, so I'm thinking my problem isn't a virus - or it is, but an old one.

Today I switched on my computer and because it had been on standby for a while it did the usual checking of drives and things...this took a while. But then ever since that, every time I switch it on - instead of taking me to the password section. I get this logo screen. Like the password screen without anywhere to type a password. And it just stays like that. Then I tried starting it in safe mode and it does the same thing?

What the hell do I do?

Any advice would be welcome.

First off you haven't mentioned what OS you are using? If its XP, then most probably your installation boot files got messed up. You can pop in the XP cd and boot off your cd drive. Then try the repair option and see if its of any help.

You will get a command line prompt asking to login to windows as administrator.

Once logged in, you can try repairing your boot files using the fixboot command. :)

Hey thanks man, that does sound about right. And it IS windows XP. I think the files may have been corrupted due to a virus on there - my only hope is that I don't lose me data. Ooh ho hoo, isn't that always the story. It's a bitter person that tells you at a time like this that you should have backed up your important files isn't it?

So I'm fairly computer literate - I can get the BIOS to boot up from CD and all that - but dyou think I'll be able to do this on my own?
