In the middle of the Mojave Desert National Preserve, about how many kilometers from the ghost town of Crucero (in California, USA), an enigmatic rusted metal structure in the shape of a megaphone is found, which remains embedded on two rocks, RT reports.

The object is composed of two cone-shaped metal pieces, is 2.4 meters long and has a kind of cross inside. Doubts about how it got to the desert, how it was placed there and what it is used for are now growing by the minute.

Of course many already speak of extraterrestrial origin, others that it is an X that marks the location of a great treasure and the less fanciful speak of a kind of siren or warning system.

Because it has cross-shaped metal strips inside it, others believe it is a sight or an observation device of some kind. Still others claim it is a tool pinpointing the location of a California cave system that stretches for hundreds of miles.

The truth is that it is in a place surrounded by miles and miles of nothing. No roads, no cities, no humans.

It's been there for 80 years
"My best guess is that it was placed there more than 80 years ago," noted Eric Edwards, founder of CampsitePhotos, who visited the site. "It has some similarities to an ancient mermaid."

He added: "During the 1940s and 1950s in secret, remote areas of the Mojave Desert, chemical weapons tests were conducted, so some siren was probably used if there was a mishap," says RT.

But Sarah Robey, professor of history at Idaho State University, strongly denies this theory: "The Cold War sirens had a rectangular mouth and the air raid sirens of World War II did not look like that either, even those that were more cylindrical," said the specialist to the portal How Stuff Works.

He believes it could be a measuring instrument, for example, to detect long-range shock waves, although he has his doubts.

For now, Edwards gives the location of the site in case any adventurers want to go there: "You have to use an all-terrain vehicle and drive across the Mojave River, then dirt and sand roads. From Highway 15, take the Afton Canyon exit and head east to the campground. From there, continue another 15 miles east through the canyon and follow the railroad tracks. Turn right on Crucero Road for a few miles and then start looking for it at the top of a small hill. Once you are at the location, it may be helpful to have the exact coordinates of the object (35.0056 degrees N, 116.1963 degrees W)."
