A computer cannot have more than one computer name so the answer i'm sure is no :)

but you can set the name via unnattend.txt - see ref.chm (Deployment tools)

sidenote:

you can have unnattend.txt assign -random- names tho

so that my solve your problem

I didn't say that you did but anyway... :)

have you checked ref.chm?

I'm interested in any further developments tho so let me know eh

btw it was explained to me today that the deployment tools that come with the cd do not include certain parameters as this one i'm told does :D

http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/winnt_sif.htm

Or....maybe you could (in some way) use the regkey that changes the computer name? (I'm pretty sure there is one but i'm not sure if i have it or not)

maybe someone could post it? :D

I did try the setup Manager first, and i entered the names in the part where it asked to the computer names. and all it did was create a section in the winnt.sif file called setupmgr, but it didn't read that section during the setup.

that is not what i said either :)

I no longer use setupmgr

its useless  lol (ok not useless just doesn't do it all)

I thought for a moment there you were familiar with winnt.sif/unnattended.txt

read the ref.chm that is included in the deployments tools that i posted you the link for

(and just edit your file if you find the answer to your issue)

maybe you can answer the question for us too :D

if you search the forums, you will find a few topics relating to setting the computers "Computer Name' based on the MAC address of the network adapter... therefore you can specify the names of as many different computers you want as long as you know the address's correctly...

I just did a search for it though and couldn't find it :/

I know it is on the forums though I have read it (within last month)

Well i know i'd prefer a different solution than having to know the mac :) heh

(and i hope that's not how that registry tweak works because i'd be a tad disspointed?)

nice work! :)

but here's a related and possibly helpful suggestion/question:

could there be a way to say make it generate a number that follows a particular name/phrase?

ie.

you want all your computers in the office house to start with say:

BOJANG

so that you could have

BOJANG01

BOJANG02

BOJANG03

BOJANG04

and so on?

you can set

ComputerName=*

and it will generate a random computer name

I haven't tried and doubt it would work doing

ComputerName=COMP*

or you could find the MAC address of each computer and use previous method :)
