awkduck Posted August 6, 2023 Posted August 6, 2023 @WhiteArmpits There are some "OpenGL" environment variables you could try. For a test, you could try "LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=TRUE". You could check the OpenGL version supported by your GPU, then try "MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=2.1". 2.1 could be set to whatever versions your GPU supports. I know using the VBEMP Vesa driver, I've needed to set environmental variables for SDL1.2 video and audio output/rendering. Otherwise some SDL applications/games run poorly. This is more true if your audio driver doesn't support accelerated Directsound (some AC97 drivers). So maybe you can tweak OpenGL to play along. You would open a Command Prompt, in the folder of the OpenGL application you are testing, and type something like: Quote SET MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=2.1 Then from that same Command Prompt enter the command to initiate your OpenGL application (Minecraft). Minecraft may also have environmental variables, that could be set. It might not be a bad idea to check that out; especially if there is something to set comparability with older OpenGL versions.

WhiteArmpits Posted August 7, 2023 Author Posted August 7, 2023 Update: my IBM ThinkPad T42 just stopped working, and therefore I cannot try that anymore, I will have to wait to get a new 98SE laptop in order to do that now.
awkduck Posted August 7, 2023 Posted August 7, 2023 I'm sorry to hear that. My T42 just stopped turning on one day. It always ran a little hotter, then I thought it should. I blamed the GPU. I still keep it around. Donated the memory to a T40 (post Win9x Intel GPU), I had to buy in a mixed Ebay lot. I hope you find something good.

WhiteArmpits Posted September 5, 2024 Author Posted September 5, 2024 Well, it's been over a year, but I finally got a T41p motherboard along with a new HDD and mounted them on my old T42, and it is now fully operational once again, I've tested Minecraft again (although without Mesa3D) and i can't go over 1.7.2 anyway despite the fact that the OpenGL version on my ThinkPad is 1.5 now instead of 1.3
WhiteArmpits Posted September 5, 2024 Author Posted September 5, 2024 I've now also tested TitaniumGL, and it made my system crash when I used the hardware accelerated version, after that I had also tried to use the DX7-compatible version of it, and I couldn't go past the title screen of the game with the latter, while for Mesa3D, there was no way to make it work, no matter the version, the Minecraft versions I tested were 1.7.2 and 1.12.2
pangoomis Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 Have you tried forcing Catalyst 6.2 drivers? What about the IBM drivers? http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/vftp1gme.exe Are you using latest version of SoftGPU's Mesa driver?

What about the IBM drivers? http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/vftp1gme.exe Are you using latest version of SoftGPU's Mesa driver? I've pretty much used every OpenGL wrapper available, and have always used the Catalyst 6.2 drivers as well, however I haven't tried SoftGPU's, although I've recently upgraded my ThinkPad to XP SP3 and my OpenGL version went from 1.5 to 2.1 with the latest system drivers, and I can now play Minecraft versions up to 1.12.2 smoothly (also start up to 1.16.5, but can't open worlds due to the RAM of my machine being too low), but only in single player, when I attempt playing on servers there's a delay in my actions, and also, I can't even do some basic stuff despite the OS upgrade, YouTube is laggy and barely usable comparing to last year, and I can't even watch Netflix, I don't know if I will ever decide to go back to 98SE tho, I just wanted to use both ancient and modern programs on an OS from before 2000, but it's starting to become a dream that's pretty unlikely to realize because of those hardware requirements updates, thanks for the help anyway.
