SMART extended self-test vs error scan: different or the same?

Recommended Posts

A bit bizarre that I can't  find any info on this online.

I am passing on a couple of hard drives to someone else and want to test them but don't wan't to spend more time on it than necessary.  I'm currently going with CrystalDiskInfo (SMART info), HD Tune (error scan, if 2TB or smaller) and HDDScan (short and extended self-tests).  Passmark DiskCheckup is only used in case HDDScan fails to complete an extended scan.

Is there a difference between an extended self-test and HD Tune's error scan?  Can one of these be eliminated?
