Well if you're using a router that doesn't allow the turning off of your firewall there is very little that you can do. However, alternative methods and workings would be to either install a completely new IM client or try using a proxy set-up (depending on what ports are being blocked). I don't know if i'm completely wrong by what I've just said but I know a few friends of mine have similar issues and use Trillian.

so msn msg and a router dont mix

That's not it at all.. what kind of router do you have? most routers nowadays are upnp which configure themselves and are compatible with most messangers. if you router is not UPNP then you need to search the net for the ports that msn uses and configure your router to allow those ports to your computer.
