AFAIK, desktop motherboards with SATA controller come with a BIOS that can set SATA ports emulation as IDE legacy ports, (i.e. my MSI AM3+ board provide a single port configuration, another MSI 1150 board provide a global configuration). You should check if your system is configured as a global SATA controller and no IDE/Legacy ports are activated if you use SATA mode, and viceversa if you are using IDE mode

XP provides native IDE drivers, but it needs third party SATA controller drivers. Check in your Device Manager if you are using SATA/AHCI/Enanched or IDE/PATA/Compatible/Legacy emulation, then check if it is available a driver upgrade.
