Memory and storage.

"In memory" is any data that is stored in the RAM. And by design, it is temporary and volitile, a power failue will cause a loss of this data.

Storage is the HDD, and data writen to it (unless its a chache file or in windows' page file) is permanent and will not be lost if the power goes out.

If data becomes corrupted, then it more than likely cannot me recovered (hense the term, corupt).

If a HDD crashed, thats a differnt story, you can always retreive data from that, its just a matter of how much money you are willing to spend to get it back.

Edit: Or you can read that link lol /\
