I would like to make a few gif and jpeg images but what is a good software to use other paint in windows?

For digital Image Editing:

Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks, Jasc Paint Shop Pro

For vectors... scalable logo and symbol creation:

Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand

For free, you can use The GIMP 2.0, there are Windows binaries available

Ok thanks also see I have Macromedia Freehand and Macromedia Fireworks but which is better?

For digital image editing you have to use Macromedia Fireworks. Freehand is a vetcor based editing tool only!
