Changing desktop icon spacing doesn't work?

I tried changing IconSpacing or IconVerticalSpacing (under HKCR\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics), but it doesn't do anything, also after Explorer restart or re-logging in. Am I missing something?

Here's what I use to squeeze things a bit closer together. Some of this is impossible to set from the UI.

It seems the Icon*Spacing do work after all. Restarting Explorer isn't enough, you need to sign out and back in, then move the icons.
