Items in Outlook 2007 not being deleted

I have a computer that has Outlook 2007 on it. When I click on the email message (some of them) and then click on the big "X" at the top, that normally deletes them, they are not being deleted of the page. They just get a line through them. This only happens to some of them. Any suggestions please, Mike

Is it in an IMAP account folder ? Do they get deleted when you close and reopen Outlook ?

Yes it is an IMAP folder, but they do not get deleted when I close the program.
